One of my favorite verses in the Bible is James 1:17. It reads: “Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights with whom there is no variation or shadow due to change.” I like this verse for many reasons.
1) God gives us everything. (I Tim 6:17) Everything we have, or will have, is from Him.
2) God is our Light. [for guidance, for wisdom] He lights our darkness. (Ps 18:28) (1 John 1:5)
3) God never changes. (Mal 3:6)
These three things are some of the most comforting promises that we can possibly have. As humans- who are very much influenced by how we feel- how reassuring for us to know Someone who is not!
There are times, or will be times, in our lives that we will question these promises. We will need something. We will feel like we are all alone; or we’ll think that we cannot find our way out of the darkness of our past, present or foreseeable future.
Where is our ‘good gift’ now?
Margaret Manning of RZIM writes:
“Christians understand God’s good gift as the hope that God is present no matter what life brings. Hope that God is with us, and that God’s Spirit is groaning with us in our suffering offers reassurance that we too can rise from the ashes of the most crushing events and circumstances glimpsing what beauty remains and how God redeems.”
God has truly given us everything by giving us His Perfect Gift–Himself. Let us receive these promises and hold firmly to them–even when we cannot see or do not dare to hope. Let Him be our gift of hope.
